Current WorkA small working group with representatives from the town, district and county councils along with the Chamber of Trade, has been set up to support and encourage local businesses and employment. There has been a meeting with the redeployment section at RAF Brize Norton which has led to closer working to support personnel leaving the forces wishing to find employment or set up businesses in the area. We are anxious to make sure information about business opportunities in the town are properly promoted and are currently updating our publicity material. As part of the Portas Pilot Bid an up-to-date database of all town centre businesses has been drawn up, and the Project Manager visited a large proportion of them to seek their views. The group is still anxious to encourage inward investment and employment, particularly associated with the aeronautical industry, and met recently with the Regional Director of BIS (Department of Business, Innovation and Skills). The group believes that there is now an even greater need for the provision of small start-up units and has made this a priority. We have recently made strong representations on West Oxfordshire District Council's consultation on its Draft Local Plan, emphasising this need and also expressing concern about the absence of allocation of new employment sites. For the full response, see www.carterton-tc.gov.uk/ff_news The Council and CFF Partnership have been pressing for improvements for the tenants of South Carterton Industrial Estate, and this has been partially achieved as the District Council has now agreed to extend the leases of the tenants there to enable investment to take place. The Job ClubWe received a grant in 2011 to set up the Job Club www.carterton-tc.gov.uk/jobclub which has been running very successfully. We have received a further grant from the Community Covenant Fund to provide reception and job search facilities downstairs at the Town Hall. The Economic Development Group is continuing to work to promote Carterton as a business destination and to support existing businesses and employment.
